Best Honeymoon is a honeymoon in a tropical island!:) If you like swimming, having a sunbath, visiting original places, exploring different cultures and looking for a relaxing holiday, start searching for the islands in Indian Ocean. We preffered Mauritius because it is not as famous as Maldives or Phuket, so we are noe familiar to the island from social media. This situation made us think that there are more to discover in Mauritius by ourselves.
Here is a best way of spending 1 week in Mauritius with pictures:)
TRANSPORTATION & ACCOMODATION
Port Louis Airport carries the name of the capital but it is actually located far away from the capital, in the south-east of the island. We departured from İstanbul with Turkish Airlines since there is a direct flight from İstanbul and it took 10 hours to reach the island.
We dealed with a tourism compnay before coming to Mauritius so a private car was waiting for us at the airport. We don’t reccomend you to rent a car in the island because you can hire a car with a suitable price for 1 day with a driver(local guy) and he will also be your tour guide. This way you will be listening all the things you see from a local and this is the best way of knowing a culture.
There are lots of hotels around the island but best honeymoon hotels are in the east. (Regions: Palmar, Bell Mare, Poste De Flacq). We stayed at Constance Le Prince Maurice. There were bungalows above the water and the biggest ones reserved for honeymoon couples.
When you enter the hotel, they welcome you with a glass of champagne and the surprises continue. (cakes, champagne coming to your rrom or massage discount etc.) We were satisfied with everything about the hotel just our bungalow was above some kind of lake, not sea. Therefore we couldn’t jump into the sea from our room but still it was very nice to have our drinks in our private terrace with a lovely view. At the same time seaside was not suitable for relaxing swim because of the volcanic stones on the beach. However, you will enjoy the sunbath and fresh pineapples served on the beach:)
It was October which is the South Hemisphire’s Spring and wheather was generally nice(not so cool not so hot) but some days it rained a little bit. Yet when it rained. it was just for a few hours, so it was not a big deal:)
Are you covered? Don’t forget to do travel insurance because some unpleasant surprises may find you and you shouldn’t let them to ruin your honeymoon or holiday. We had that kind of experience in Mauritius but we managed to handle it. Here is our interesting honeymoon misfortune story which provide us a useful lesson 🙂
DAILY TOURS AND SIGHTSEEING ROUTES
Curency in the island is Mauritian Rupee(MUR). We made different tours in 3 day and payed around 20.000 Rupee ( $600 approx.) Tours starts with taking you from the hotel with a private car and generally lunch and drinks are included. Drivers are so friendly and they give you all the details about the island. You will see our friend Salesh in the picture. He was with us for 2 days and we really enjoyed his accompany:)
1.South & Hidden Beauties
The most original part of the island is the south and Chamarel Region. 7 colored earth is one of the tourist attractions. There are several volcanic mountains in the island and this colorfol region is the result of volcanic activities. Chamarel waterfall in the same region is another natural beauty. You will also have chance to see giant turtles (1m) the park near the waterfall.
For the lunch, Le Chamarel Restaurant is the best choice with its amazin panoromic view. You can capture wonderfull memories in here:)
Grand Bassin is an interesting and charming region with Indian Temples, secret lake and giant God Sculptures. Bring some bananas with you while coming to this region because lovely monkeys are waiting for you. If you share your banana with them, they will become your close friends:)
Another important place that you shouldn’t miss is the Chamarel Rum Factory. You can see the production steps and you may join an excellent rum tasting session in the factory. Mauritius earns huge amount of their income from the sugar canes and rum produced by suger canes. You can also taste the suger cane juice purely but i don’t think you will like it:)
2.Port Louis/Grand Baie Tour and Undersee Walking
To be honest, Port Louis is not a very intersting city but you may enjoy walking in the market at the center of the city and drink a cup of coffee. Then, you can go to Grand Baie and by using the boats depart from here you can reach the undersea walking zone. They put some weight on you like a belt and you will be carrying a big metal box on your head. They will be giving oxigyen to this box and you will be breathing easily. One guide will always be with you under the water and he will check if you are ok or not. Actually it is not that dangerous because you are just 3m meters below the surface. You may also feed fishes with bread and take some pictures with them with Go-pro. 🙂
3.Catamaran Tour at the Southwest Seaside
A private car takes you from the hotel and brings you to the catamaran. The path that the tour follows is very nice. Especially the snorkelling break was amazing with colorful fishes and corals. Also in the afternoon you will have chance to jump into a smaller boat and by following a lovely sea road you will reach a small waterfall and it is a nice place to get cool in hot summer days.
Those were the 3 tours that we had chosen. Here is the other interesting activities that you can do in Mauritius:
Tea Route: Visit Le Domaine des Aubineaux colonial house coverted into museum and drive along tea plantations to Le Domaine de Bois Cheri for a guided factory visit. End of the day have a tea breake at L’Antiquaire where you will discover French and British colonial heritage.
Fishing Tour: Especially at the fishing tour made in the North, you will have chance to see big and interesting fishes and guides will help you to catch them.
Blue Quest: Discover the local marine life with the crew. You will come across dolphins, turtles and marine birds.
Safari: Visit Casela region and you will see zebras, giraffes, lions etc. Also you will have chance to join some thrilling adventures like ziplines in this region.
Symbol of the island is extincted DODO birds. These birds are very cute and it is vers sad that they don!t exist anymore… While you are leaving Mauritius you can take some souveniers made with Dodo shape. It will be an original gift for your friends.
We are sure there are lots of hidden natural beauties to be discovered. We tried to do our best in 1 week. If you have any other additional comments suggestions, or questions about the island, please add them to the comment section below so that we can continue to travel together!… 🙂
